Making the most of your holidays

Posted: 15 July 2019

Scholar's Platform,

Holidays often come and go in the blink of an eye. Taking some time off to relax and reflect is important. However, with no classes to attend or assignments due, it is also the perfect opportunity to enjoy Australia and try something new.

Here are some ideas to make the most of your holidays:

Take a short trip. To maximise your time here, consider travelling and seeing what Australia has to offer. In each state, there are many quaint and interesting country towns, historical sites and beautiful natural sites. Visit local areas of importance or interest; you may end up discovering a hidden gem!

Learn a new skill. Have you always wanted to learn how to swim, ride a bike, or drive a car? How about how to set up a LinkedIn profile? Many states, local councils, libraries and Universities have courses and workshops regarding new skills development. Often courses or workshops are discounted or free for students. Search online for opportunities in your local area.

Volunteer. Volunteering is a unique way to make a difference in your community, connect with others, contribute to society and develop new skills. You can find volunteering opportunities through community organisations, libraries, charities, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), or through your University. Read more about scholars Mahpara and Saima and their recent volunteering experiences.

Attend an event. Consider attending an event aligned to your professional, academic or personal interests. Attending such events can give you the opportunity to build new professional or personal networks. Online platforms such as Meetup, Facebook local and Eventbrite are good resources for finding relevant events near you. Check out our list of upcoming events in your state, here.

Prepare yourself for the next semester. As your holidays come to an end, use your last few days to prepare yourself for the next semester. Get organised, create a schedule, gather up your University supplies, reflect on your previous semester and set goals for the upcoming semester. Give yourself the best shot at academic success.
